Its All about Jazz Fusion free essay sample
Its All about Jazz Fusion BY Jackie Its All About Jazz Fusion Of the Jazz styles studied In this module, I prefer jazz-rock-fusion. I enjoy listening to this style of jazz because it creates a rock mood by its different melodies, complex rhythms, tones and harmonies. Jazz -fusion, melds rock rhythms and the use of electronic instruments with collective improvisation (Ferris). Jazz music in general is mostly improvised music, so its melody is an interesting element to its listeners. I feel that being a jazz musician has to be complicating. There are so many, extreme ranges In volume, rapid shifts In meter, tempo and mood, In Jazz-fusion (Ferns). Therefore. These musicians are creating art every time he or she plays. After listening to some of the jazz-fusion music clips, it is hard for me to tell that they are all apart of the same genre. This makes me prefer this style of jazz even more because listening to the same pieces of music sounds different even if the same musicians play it. We will write a custom essay sample on Its All about Jazz Fusion or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Whereas in popular music, the same melody is repeated constantly with little or no variations.Another reason why I prefer Jazz-fusion style Is because a lot of people cant listen to a type of music if there are no lyrics. I appreciate the listeners that can listen to instrumental music because not a lot of people can. I feel that most popular artists are usually singers because they are the ones who sing the melody, while the other instruments are Just heard in the background. Jazz-fusion music is not appreciated by a lot of listeners because they think its Just background music. I have a deferent outlook as a listener of the Jazz-fusion style.I know there are multiple melodies, rhythms, harmonies, and tones In this style of music, but I can still appreciate how It Is played. The aesthetic notes that are being played by the different instruments are the lyrics in my mind. You do not need words to be sung by a singer in a song for you to have your mood set by a genre of music. All music makes one feel a certain way when they listen to it depending on the tones, type of scales and melodies that are being played. An artist that I like to believe Is the face of Jazz-fusion styled music Is Miles Davis.I have listened to a lot of his songs from his On the Corner album and I find him to be one the greatest jazz-fusion artist. His improvisation talent amazes me. Some of the songs that Ive listened to from his On the Corner album, I found to have some peculiar timbre from some of the instruments. According to Americas Musical Landscape text, The album features an amazing array of instruments, including an Indian sitar, and a rock (funky) drumbeat (Ferris). His creativity of the jazz-fusion music made me look at this style of Jazz from a new perspective.I know that Jazz- rock-fusion Is not limited to Just some rock and rhythm and blues being thrown together to create music but it is a work of art that can be turned to funk like Miles Davis has shown which has inspired other musicians to do as well. I feel that jazz- rock-fusion is the style that is likely to have the most influence on future musicians. Every style of music is always evolving but I feel that jazz-fusion would have the largest impact on future musicians because a lot of the sounds are electronic like entities to evolve, as musicians explore new technology and world sounds (Ferris).Without technology, the music that is being played today would not be alive. Future musicians goals are to be popular. To achieve their goals, they have to be apart of the digital trend and use electronics to create the background in todays music. The electric sounds of a synthesizer, organ, guitars, drums, etc. Have all evolved from somewhere, someone, or something. Hence, why I feel that Jazz-rock-fusion is likely to have the most influence on future musicians. No other style of Jazz has the monuments to create contemporary music like Jazz-rock-fusion does.In conclusion, I prefer to listen to Jazz-rock fusion. Its melodies are beautiful and unpredictable. The improvisation that was used to create this amazing style of music is incredible. Miles Davis kept this style of music alive and that is why the instruments that are used in jazz-fusion are timeless. Music being made today uses instruments that have evolved from the Jazz-fusion style and this is why I feel it is appropriate to say that this style of music has the most influence on future musicians.

Background of the Industry When we talk about industry, first we need to identify the elements that constitute the industry. What is the background of the industry that Power Root is operating in. Power Root is geographically located in Malaysia. In terms of the industry, Power Root can be concluded as being in several different segments within the larger beverage industry. They are mainly in the instant coffee drinks segment with the core product being Ali Cafe TongkatAli drinks. This instant coffee segment is a large and very attractive segment. Due to changes in lifestyle, current trend shows that people value speed. This to the extend something as simple as making coffee is required to be simplified which explains the phenomenal growth of instant coffee drinks. Can drinks is another segment they are operating in. Can drinks is a big market with almost all beverage having a can product. People like can drinks for its convenience and cool factor. The cereal market is another industry segment where fierce competition is common. Due to the high consumption nature of breakfast foods, this segment is lucrative to capture. Chocolate drink segment is fast growing. Although not as strong as in US but cocoa based drink trend is catching on in Malaysia. Power Root knows this and hence the release of Cocoa based drink like Pearl Cafeââ¬â¢ Choco. A little background about Tongkat Ali which is being used as the main ingredient not only by Power Root but also by Power Rootââ¬â¢s competitors. Tongkat Ali also known as Eurycoma Longifolia Jack is a common herbal shrub usually found along the slopes of hilly terrain of the Malaysian rainforests. This shrub is identified as the ââ¬ËBitter Curesââ¬â¢ because it is really bitter and it also can cure all sorts of ailments and diseases. ââ¬ËPasak Bumiââ¬â¢ or the ââ¬ËEarth Fixerââ¬â¢ is also one of them and because of its solid and long winding roots, it got its name and the name is Tongkat Ali. The name is said to be associated with a dashing warrior, the hidden meaning to the name- the spirit of manliness and health. The herb helps to revitalize tired minds and body and soothes a person. In addition, Kacip Fatimah is another common herb found in the rain forests of Malaysia, it contains element of antioxidants and photo estrogen, where these two elements are known to provide goodness and health to both women and men. These 2 herbs together present a multimillion or perhaps a multibillion dollar market to be exploited. With the emerging trends and unfulfilled needs in terms of personal healthcare this industryââ¬â¢s core has a long way to go. The general situation right now in the industry is the intense competition among the manufacturers of such herb based beverage drinks. Since taking the herb in pill or medical form does not interest consumer much, beverage is seen as the next best way to sell such products. Hence many entrants have made the fight hard especially when some competitors purposely copy the entire brand elements of another successful brand. Consumer Analysis Needs There is a real need for energy and herbal based drink in Malaysian market. Hence Power Root is seen as a natural choice because they contain Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah, 2 most well known energy boosting herbs. Because of these two main herbs in their products, customer demands are increasing because they believe that Power Root products can help them in their daily lifestyles in all ways. They believe they will feel re-energized and be more energetic after drinking it. These herbs are indigenous to Malaysia and its properties for promoting physical well-being are highly regarded by Malaysians. These needs are however not restricted to local arena alone as there high demands from foreign countries such as Brunei, Indonesia, Middle East signifying the universality of the need. Branding Strategies Brands today are no longer like the way it was once before where brands were merely a name assigned to a product. Today consumers respond positively to brands and the more powerful a brand is the greater opportunities that brand will have especially in terms of profit. Power Root is only 9 years old and barely a teenager but in Malaysia they have become one of the number one brands in beverages. And today they are venturing into exporting their products to other countries like Indonesia and to the Middle Eastern Region like Dubai. In getting to where they are today Power Root has made efforts in their branding strategies. Some branding strategies they have applied are using spokespersons, sponsoring events, having road shows around Malaysia, organizing contests through publicity, billboards, advertising and having sub brands or extensions. Power Root has invested in using public figures and celebrities to be their spokespeople. Using a spokesperson is when an organization uses a person to represent the organization. Power Root have employed four very well known Malaysian celebrities in representing their brand who are Rosyam Nor one of Malaysiaââ¬â¢s number one leading actors, Adam and Faraf from the very popular reality show ââ¬Å"Akademi Fantasiaâ⬠and one of Malaysiaââ¬â¢s songbirds Nurul. They have been used in promoting Power Rootââ¬â¢s products via commercials, road shows, and ads. Another brand strategy used by Power Root is by sponsoring events. Some of the events sponsored by Power Root are the ââ¬ËDance with Nnergyââ¬â¢ competition which is a dance competition during Jomheboh, one of Malaysiaââ¬â¢s very popular carnivals handled around the country. Power Root has even sponsored drama series on TV 2 entitled ââ¬Å"Dilemma Wanitaâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Rafflesiaâ⬠. Another event they have sponsored is Smart Kids 2006 (Aerospace Educational Planet). Every event they sponsor is a way for them to publicize their product to the public and create brand awareness. Linking a brand to events helps consumers to build their trust towards a brand and also it portrays a more likeable image for the consumers. Power Root has also organized road shows around Malaysia. Road shows are travelling exhibit as a way to promote a companyââ¬â¢s product. In this case, Power Root has gone around Malaysia from Penang to Johor to promote their products and also some of their contest like promoting one of their biggest contests the ââ¬Å"You Can Be a Millionaireâ⬠contest. Through road shows Power Root can also build positive rapport with their loyal customers and plus achieve new customers. Power Root has also organized many contests in the past in order to stimulate sales and at the same time build brand loyalty. These contests include the search for gold and prizes under the tab of the can products and the most recently is the ââ¬ËBe a Millionaireââ¬â¢ contest. Publicity or public relation is used to promote or protect a companyââ¬â¢s image or products. Over the years Power Root have conducted various forms of publicity in promoting their brand. For example in the year 2006 Power Root organized a press and conference and simultaneously officially launched their new Power Root Ambassadors for that year. By organizing this sort of publicity they have created again brand awareness for the public. Another example of their efforts in publicity is through having official events to launch their contests so that consumers especially Power Root loyal customers are aware of their contest which they can participate and maybe have some opportunity in winning grand prizes. Other than that Power Root has also put up billboard along the PLUS highway. They have organized a continuous of 20f x 60f Billboard Campaign along the PLUS highway. The PLUS highway is the main highway to get from North to South of Malaysia and many Malaysian citizens use this highway to get from one destination to another. By putting up billboards along the highway, Power Root has great exposure because many Malaysian citizens use the highway daily. Power Root has also used many forms of advertising to promote their brand. Like mentioned before using billboards and such, Power Root has also used other ways of advertising their product for instance through television commercials, radio commercials and print advertisements. With their ambassadors, they use them in their commercials to promote their brand. Choosing the right form of advertisement is crucial so that Power Root can reach the right customers. Lastly, another form of brand strategy Power Root has adopted is through brand extensions and sub-branding. There are two forms of brand extension which are line extension and category extension. Power Root has adopted both the line extension and category extension. Line extensions use sub-brands to target a new market segment within the same category. For example under the Power Root brand name in the coffee line, they have come up with Ali Cafe targeting male consumers and Pearl Cafe to target female consumers. As for category extension, it is a form of extension by using the parent brand in a different product category. Power Root, the company that owns Ali Cafe, set up its business in 1999 and was quick to realize that consumer preferences and lifestyles were evolving. As such; the company was able to quickly establish a stable business foundation and thus, creates a very promising future for the company. ii. Besides that, Power Root and its range branded canned and premixed powder drinks has become one of the most successful and recognizable local brands within a short span of 7 years. Power Rootââ¬â¢s brands include: Ali Cafe and Perl Cafe ââ¬âcanned coffee and premixed instant coffee powder infused with Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah extracts respectively; Power Root ââ¬â a range of flavored energy drinks with Tongkat Ali extract; Alitea ââ¬â premixed instant tea powder with Tongkat Ali extract; Oligo Cafe ââ¬â premixed instant coffee powder with Oligofructose; and Nnergy ââ¬â a carbonated energy drink with added vitamins. Power Rootââ¬â¢s commitment towards its brand promise is epitomized by its co-sponsorship of the 2006 World Cup live Malaysia telecast and on the local front, the hugely popular Jom Heboh! Since the brand is easily recognizable and most people would have no trouble recalling it from their mind either so it has a strong presence in consumersââ¬â¢ mind and is well positioned. The products generate positive reviews and the company invests heavily in marketing and branding iii. The key of Power Roots brand is the quality level which begins at the material procurement stage, ensuring best technology, while offering fortified nutritional and health benefits that meets the needs of the modern lifestyle consumers. Currently, the company has created three successful brands in the UAE and Middle Eastern markets which have their unique taste and appeal to tea and coffee loving populace here. No doubt therefore Power Roots is the first Malaysian beverage Company that made it big in the UAEà and Middle Eastern Market. Inà 2006 Power Root acquired, the prestigious GMP, and HACCP certification, giving consumers a better peace of mind. In the UAE, Power Root has aggressively promoted its brand in order to carve out a market share. A huge promotion outlay has also been provided at the ongoing Global Village, at Seef Road and the Night Souk where Power Root stalls are attracting good crowds. Weaknesses i. As we can see there are a lot of strengths for Power Root Company, but there are also some weaknesses that can be found in the company. As mentioned, Power Root, a truly Malaysian success story main target consumer is Malay majority market in this country. With the limitation of the Malay target market, it may cause Power Root lack of visibility among non-Malay market. As we know Malaysia is a country which comprised of Chinese, Malay and India citizens, if the company only limit the scope by only concentrates in Malay market however it will neglect the non-Malay consumers and lose a very good chances to increase their profits. ii. Although Power Root is a well-known company in Malaysia, the brand information is not that easy to find. It is very easy to find the brandââ¬â¢s products but it seems hard when consumers wish to search the information about the brand. Therefore, lack of information regarding brand is another weaknesses of Power Root. Brand Associations Brand Positioning Analysis Positioning refers to the place a brand has in the consumerââ¬â¢s mind. The consumer should be able to recall what the brand is associated with in a flash. The moment they see they should be able to think what Power Root stands for. Power Rootââ¬â¢s main positioning strategy seems to focus a lot on the energy drink mantra. They have marketed and branded it so intensively by focusing on the energy giving aspect of their products. So much so that most consumers when asked today will immediately think of energy provider, health drink, stamina provider and some even regard it as a mild aphrodisiac. Summary of Competitor Analysis. In a nutshell, Power Rootââ¬â¢s competitors have 1 thing in common, they all focus on the same thing that Power Root target but their approach seems to take a bit of sexual undertone. The competitorââ¬â¢s products are branded as an aphrodisiac for sexual prowess with the focus being centred on Tongkat Ali herb. Tongkat Ali is widely used and is used more than Kacip Fatimah in fact. Power Rootââ¬â¢s competitors either become a follower by following the same business methodology and branding strategy or they start of on their own by launching it using their own strategy. The more upscale brands such as Super Power tend to have a more urban approach while the less known brands like Kopi RADIX have a more traditionalistic approach. SWOT analysis Listing of a companyââ¬â¢s strengths and weaknesses are a normal part of any attempt at strategic planning for virtually all companies. To be sure the company is headed in the right direction, a competent, thoughtful review and updating of the companyââ¬â¢s strengths and weaknesses is a fundamental element of a good strategic planning. Strengths Household name- Power Root is a true Malaysian success story, it has presence in several country and no other companies has such a hold especially in the Malay majority market in this country. International presence- Presence in international markets such as Indonesia, Singapore, Korea and UAE. Product success- Power Rootââ¬â¢s products are currently making waves in the market such as Alicafe, Perl Cafe, Alitea and so on. Convenience- Each of these products is ready to drink convenient brand, one just has to add hot water and drink it. Strong distribution network- Power Root has access to most outlets and thus effec tively found the end-users due to a well-developed distribution network nationwide. They have a networking of key dealers, wholesalers, supermarkets, retailers and overseas distributors. Today, we can find the products almost everywhere in 7-Eleven stores, petrol stations, Giant, Tesco, Carrefour, Jusco, just to name a few. Weaknesses Lack of Information- Power Root has limited information on their product and have a weak online presence as well. Packaging sizes- No various choices in packaging of instant cafe. They should produce various size of packaging. For example, providing a smaller package for instant cafe. Over focus on beverage- Power Root focus more on beverage products only. They should expand and explore to another market such as capsule or food but they need to still maintain the product reputation. Lack of presence in non-Malay market- The overfocus on 1 segment means that Power Root may be losing out on opportunities from other market segments as well. No slogan for the brand- Power Root is yet to have a distinctive brand slogan. Opportunities Arrival of new technologies- With the upcoming technologies in the world today businesses can be done online. Power Root can promote their brand via internet as internet advertisement is becoming a more and more popular form of advertisement as itââ¬â¢s cheap yet accessible. Other technologies that can be used is online banners, television, satellite and such Free Trade Agreements (FTA) approvals- In the current issue today Malaysia is moving into efforts of getting the FTA approval. Achieving this approval Power Root can export products to countries like the U. S. Power Root has already made efforts in exporting to countries like Indonesia and Dubai. Having greater opportunities to export in other parts of the world is a plus for the brand and also the country. Unfulfilled customer needs- Power Root has ventured into a market that targets the use of Malaysian herbs into beverages. Not many quality brands out there provide this category of product. Therefore Power Root has the opportunity to intensively market their product to Malaysian consumers and also other neighbouring ASEAN countries who also share the same value of herbs as healthy drinks like Thailand, India and China. Threat Competitors- As mentioned and analyzed above, Power Root faces a lot of competitors in various forms and sizes. Oversaturation of market- The entry of many new players intend on capitalizing on the Tongkat Ali craze means that the market may become too overcrowded and in the process may hurt Power Root strategies. Brand Equity Evaluation ââ¬Å"The differential effect that brand knowledge has on consumer response to the marketing of that brand. â⠬ Keller, 1993 That is the general definition of a what a brand equity is. Brand equity serves as a platform where companies with brands learn from the past and guide their future plans accordingly. The consumerââ¬â¢s brand knowledge is the most important thing when it comes to building brand equity. Power Root consumers have sufficient knowledge when it comes to the brand itself. They are able to form brand associations fast. When consumers are able to define what are the characteristics associated with Power Root such as the events they are involved in, their brand elements, and their sponsorships and so on it shows that the consumers are able to form fast connection in their mind about Power Root. It also proves that many consumers have been exposed to the brand many times before. Brand knowledge consists of 2 core, brand awareness and brand image. Power Root has a very strong brand awareness among the consumers especially their target market the Malay market. Even those not targeted are sometimes aware of the brand proving the awareness level for the brand. Second is brand image. Power Root has a very strong image in terms of its brand elements such as logo, packaging, colour and so on. Consumers are able to pinpoint which is Power Root fast as they have the correct description in their minds. However brand image needs to be something that is strong and favourable and it does seem like Power Root matches all the criteria of a brand with high brand knowledge among consumers. Salience Depth of brand awareness- Customers are able to easily recall information and image about Power root Breadth of brand awareness- When it comes to purchasing and consuming Power Root, consumers donââ¬â¢t seem to mind or think twice before buying. What consumers want when they buy the drink is what they get or perhaps even better. It is a value buy for them relative to the price. Imagery- Power Root has portrayed the right image in terms of consumer profile, who they are, where the product should be located, association with strong personalities that best showcase the brand itself and so on. Judgement- In terms of brand quality, Power Root is the front runner. No one invests in R like Power Root in the industry and that explains the high quality since they emphasize a lot on quality. The brand is seen as credible and superior compared to other competitors. Feelings- Consumers love this product and they love how it is being branded. Resonance- This can be seen in how attached some customers become to the brand. They call it their comfort drink and form an attachment to it. They are many consumers who have made this drink as their daily staple proving their loyalty. And judging from the many support Power Root gets to its events and contests, it shows just how the brand has formed an alliance with consumers and resonate well with them. Strategic Brand Management Recommendations There are always room for improvement even if the brand is already very successful. Power Root despite its successes, still has room for improvement. There are 4 recommendations by how Power Root can be further improved. Target Introduce to Non-Malay markets Non-Malay market presents an opportunity for Power Root as their purchasing power is yet to be tapped into. Many are not aware of the product yet and most competitor are very focused on Malay market just like Power Root. Perhaps by diversifying their target, they can enhance their presence in the local market and tighten their stronghold as well. Increase Expand international presence Power Root currently has only expanded to 4 countries, namely Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and UAE. There are many countries where coffee drinking is a craze such as France and US and presents untapped opportunities. Create a slogan Power Root currently has a void to be filled and that is clear, catchy slogan. Being an important brand element, slogan can help improve brand awareness and brand recognition. Enhance online presence The website needs to be more interactive and should be enhanced with more information. Currently it lacks in terms of interactivity and access to interesting informations. Jealous Husband Returns in the Form of a Parrot Essay - 1
Jealous Husband Returns in the Form of a Parrot - Essay Example His inner frustration is vented out when he says, ââ¬ËI flap my wings and I squawk and I fluff up and I slick down and I throw seed and I attack that dangly toy as if it was the guy's ballsââ¬â¢ (Butler). However, it merely increases his frustration for the result is merely a deeper realization of his tragic reality: ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦ it does no good. It never did any good in the other life either, the thrashing around I did by myselfââ¬â¢ (Butler). The writer, therefore, revolves the story and the narration around this inner conflict felt by the parrot, who has no choice now but to see other men visiting his wife in what used to be his home. Robert Olen Butler, in fact, adds to the agony of the parrot/jealous husband through the constructed set of the play. The narrator returns to his home when he is bought by his wife and is incarcerated in a cage. The entire setting of the story then takes place within the house, that once used to be the home of this jealous husband. However, the irony of the situation is that the position of his cage is such that he is only able to see part of the bedroom. He can see every man enter and exit his house but can not see any activity that takes place in the bedroom, which adds to his frustration and his curiosity. The narrator expresses his frustration, explaining: ââ¬ËWhen she keeps the bedroom door open I can see the space at the foot of the bed but not the bed itself. That I can sense to the left, just out of sight. I watch the men go in and I hear the sounds but I can't quite see. And they drive me crazyââ¬â¢ (Butler). These frustrations and the inner conflict of the narrator are cleverly portrayed by the writer, for he not only uses the point of view of the parrot but also gives a humanistic element to the narration. While the parrot has all the qualities and limitations of a bird, the narration of the parrot is altogether human.à Ã

Emerging Technologies - Essay Example Here, it becomes possible to document, store, maintain, access and share information in just a blink of an eye. As names, cases, profiles, offenses, fingerprints and other data are entered into a digital library, they can be accessed by law enforcers through networked computer terminals, regardless of location and time. Furthermore, computing technology provides for intelligent applications that could classify information into an organized database - a feat that could take years and huge manpower to accomplish. Specific technologies that are increasingly being utilized today especially for solving cold cases include the DNA technology and the advanced DNA database systems. This partnership resulted in the establishment of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) - a computer network that links the forensic DNA laboratories on all levels from local, state to the federal level. The capability of the CODIS is astounding. In the event a DNA profile is extracted from a crime scene and entere d into the database, the system automatically launches a search among thousands of criminal profiles for possible match. Law enforcers have been successful using CODIS. For instance, there was the case of rape with murder in Austin, which could have left unsolved because there were no witnesses and the killer-rapist used gloves and condom during the assault. What happened was that, when he tied his victim, he had to grab an end of the cord with his mouth, so his saliva was deposited and eventually examined, leading to the identification of the perpetrator and the successful prosecution. (Justice Department, p. 2) There are also the softwares called ââ¬Å"data miningâ⬠applications. Many police investigators are increasingly using this technology to identify the crime patterns that matches them to potential suspects. This is being done by analyzing the behavioral patterns of criminals that allows for the profiling of suspects, helpful in recognizing the identification of suspec ts that matches the computerââ¬â¢s working profile. Siegel also cited the use of computerized imaging systems that gradually replace mug books as well as the use of three-dimensional drawings in investigating and evaluating crime scenes. This latter is important because it enables investigators to visualize positional relationship of evidences. Cybercrime Computing technology, however, could prove to be a double-edged sword. The sophistication it offers to law enforcers is also made available to criminals. For example, when information is stored in a centralized database, the ease of access can benefit those who want to exploit information for criminal purposes. For example, a criminal can use the technology to embezzle funds or modify information that could lead to the wrong apprehension of criminals or tamper with evidence. Information technology can also enable criminals to kill people through the tampering of medical records that could result in wrong diagnosis or treatment. Then, there are those cases that involve theft of trade secret, financial reports, sensitive information, and so on. Clearly, one sees how the list of computer-aided crimes is growing as well. Another important problem that technology poses for law enforcers is the internationalization of crime. Through the networked computer terminals, criminals can operate globally without any difficulty, with the ease of

Guided Reading Essay Example for Free
Guided Reading Essay Abstract This paper will describe the leveling process and how leveled books fit into the reading classroom. It will also describe how to use tools yourself, to locate lists of leveled books, how the listed levels of a title compare between one you leveled, what the publisher class the level and the guided is reading classroom as a function. The last part of this paper will describe the instructional level of a student previously interview in Module 1. Guided Reading How to use leveling tools yourself Guided reading is an instructional approach that teacher uses when students are reading at the same level of instruction. The teacher selects books from certain reading levels to guide students to make connections from print to the text. The books are easily read with the support of the teacher. Challenges and opportunities for problem solving are offered in the text. Choice selection of the books from the teacher will expand their strategies. The purpose of guided reading is for the teacher to select books that students can read with 90% accuracy. When the story is introduced to the student by the teacher, the students, through their own strategies understand and enjoy the story because it is available to them. Pinnell, (2007) states that guided reading gives students the chance to apply the strategies they already know to new text. The teacher supplies support, but the ultimate goal is independent reading. Readers that have developed some since of print have already gained important understanding of it. If they have encountered a problem in reading they will monitor their own reading and check on themselves while searching for possibilities or alternatives How to locate list of leveled books. In order for the teacher to locate leveled books for their students, the teacher should select the students with similar reading habits and behaviors. These students should experience reading habits and behaviors in the same time frame. The guide lines of the choice of books should be not too easy, yet not too hard, and offers a variety of challenges to help readers become flexible problem solvers (Pinnell, 2007). When choosing a guided reading program or leveled books, the teacher should look for books that are similar to their knowledge, are interesting to them, support them to move to the next step in reading, and give just the right amount of challenge to ensure that problem solving is taking place while supporting fluency and understanding. Leveled book collection is a large set of books organized in levels of difficulty from easy books that an emergent reader might read, to the longer, complex books that advanced readers will select. The leveled books collections may be housed in an area where it is easily accessible. A key component in a guided reading program is the leveled books. The scholastic Guided Reading Program is a varied collection of books that are categorized by the kind and level of challenge they offer children as they are learning to read. The Guided Reading Program consists of 260 books organized into 26 levels of difficulty ââ¬âLevels A-Z. Many different characteristics of the texts are considered in determining the level of challenge and support a particular book or short story presents (Pinnell, 2007) Some leveled books may consist of the teachersââ¬â¢ working collaborately together to construct leveled books from large collections of books. When teachers have been teaching a long time, they began to acquire the knowledge necessary to know what is easy and what is difficult for their students. When using the books frequently, the teachers will notice that categories of their collections will become more established (Scholastic. com) How the listed levels of a title compare between one you leveled. There are factors and criteriaââ¬â¢s for leveling books. There is no distinct characteristic that can be used to evaluate text or reading materials. Some of the factors that are considered when evaluating text are length, layout, structure and organization, illustrations, words, phrases and sentences, literacy features, and content and theme (Scholastics. com). When compared the book that was leveled with the books in Scholastics, it was very close. The formation was based on the factors and criteriaââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ for leveling books. Guided reading classroom, how it functions, its advantages, and its disadvantages. The guided reading classrooms should have an independent reading practice location. This independent practice space should welcome students to a rich environment for reading. Teachers with a good sense of what a rich reading environment consist of will include in the reading practice location pillows or a couch for a feeling of an invitation to read. Students need to feel very comfortable when reading. The library in a guided classroom needs to be complete with rich and exciting literature. Some of the literature that should be included in the library is fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, magazines, current events, and sports and whatever you feel as a teacher that the students will be interested in. Technology is a major component of a guided reading classroom. It services as an independent and small group practice while the teacher is working with students in a small guided reading group. The guided reading groups should consist of four to six students at a time. The sessions for guided reading groups vary depending upon what level of readers you are dealing with. It is often 10-15 minutes for emergent readers, and 15-30 minutes for more advanced readers. Also in a guided reading classroom there should be cross curriculum centers for writing, art, and science which can be done at their desk with very little instruction. This would take very explicit planning on the teacher part. This will allow for the teacher to continue guided reading groups. A teacher-led small-group assessment area should be located in a place where the teacher has total vision of her classroom, but yet in an area where the students that are in the guided reading area can be together so that the skill can be implemented as one. Finally, there should be a designated area where the teacher can teach in a whole group setting. The advantages of a guided reading classroom when the teachers are working with a particular group, is that they can control what is going on in the classroom and ensure that the students are actively engaged at all times. By setting guided reading classrooms up this way, the teacher can take an informal assessment of behaviors whether or not the students are working in centers, at their desk or with the teacher in a guided reading group. The teacher should be taking running records, jotting anecdotal notes, or even conducting oral interviews if time permits. The disadvantages of this guided reading classroom is that it will take a lot of planning time to ensure that the centers all have meaningful activities that will help them read or increase their ability to interact with each other. Most of the time teachers do not have centers that are effective because of the necessary time needed for preparation to ensure an effective guided reading classroom. These guided reading groups should constantly change from week to week to ensure that all students are actively engaged in a differentiated atmosphere. Student from Module 1 This student could fall between emergent literacy and beginning reader because in module 1 the student started finger pointing and looking at the picture to determine the words. Also the student had trouble with the recognition of sight words. The student experienced difficulty with decoding unfamiliar words. This was a 3rd grade student that seemed very happy at home. The student does understand the concepts of print and words. Even thought she had trouble with decoding unfamiliar words, she seems to have phonological awareness. Knowledge of alphabets was noted. Her Independent level was grade 1, Instructional grade 1-2, and Frustration Level is Grade 3. Can this student benefit from a pull-out intervention program that focus on sight words and decoding? Conclusion This paper described the leveling process and how leveled books fit into the reading classroom. It will also described how to use tools yourself, to locate lists of leveled books, how the listed levels of a title compare between one you leveled, what the publisher class the level and the guided is reading classroom as a function. The last part of this paper described the instructional level of a student previously interview in Module 1. References Pinnell, G. S. Margaret Mead :: essays research papers
Margaret Mead (1901-1978) Margaret Mead was born on Monday, December 16, 1901, at the West Park Hospital in Philadelphia, P.A. Margaret was the first baby to be born in this hospital, and because of this, she felt different from the rest of the children, because they had all been born at home. Margaret’s parents were from the midwest, and because of their professions, the family moved quite a bit living in such places as Hampton, New Jersey; Greenwich Village in New York City, and St. Marks Square in Philadelphia. Because she moved so much as a child, Margaret had been subjected to many different styles of living, and therefore had a growing desire to learn more about different lifestyles and cultures. Margaret’s first major experience was going to school. Margaret often felt out of place because of moving so much and being in many different schools, and often being taught at home by her grandmother. However, it was in high school that she met and later became engaged to a man by the name of Luther Cressman. After attending many high schools because of her family’s travel, she graduated, and was sent to DePauw University at Greencastle Indiana in 1919, where her intention was to major in English. Unfortunately, Margaret was looked down on in DePauw, so she transferred to Barnard College where she studied with Franz Boas and his student Ruth Benedict. It was also at Barnard College that she decided to make anthropology her main field of study. She received her B.A. degree from Barnard in 1923. In September of that same year, Margaret was married to Luther in a small Episcopal Church where she had been baptized. She then continued her studies as a graduate student, and in 1924 she received her M.A. degree in Psychology from Columbia University. In 1925, she completed her doctoral thesis, but did not receive her Ph.D from Columbia until 1929. Also in 1925, she began her first field work project, in the Samoan Islands. On her return to the United States in 1926, Margaret was appointed assistant curator of ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History. Her second field work, to the Manus Tribe of the Admiralty Islands in the West Pacific Ocean, was made possible by a Social Science Research Council Fellowship in 1928 and continued into 1929. In 1930, Dr. Mead was began her third field trip, this time to study an American Indian tribe which she calls'; the antlers'; in her book reporting her findings and conclusions. Compare and Contrast two poems: Welsh Landscape and East Moors Essay
ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠is written by R.S Thomas. He was a Welsh traditionalist born in 1913 and he died in 2000. He has strong views and lives in the past thinking of Wales of having no present or future. The poem consists of just one stanza. The main theme of this poem is war imagery, the words that suggest this are ââ¬Å"ambushâ⬠, ââ¬Å"spilled bloodâ⬠, ââ¬Å"wildâ⬠, ââ¬Å"strifeâ⬠, ââ¬Å"strungâ⬠, ââ¬Å"sped arrowsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"criesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"fieldsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"cornersâ⬠and ââ¬Å"carcassâ⬠. He describes Wales to have ââ¬Å"spilled bloodâ⬠which describes past battles. He goes on to describe how the ââ¬Å"immaculate riversâ⬠are dyed ââ¬â they canââ¬â¢t be perfect. Even water is effected by past occurrences, blood is becoming part of nature. Nature has been corrupted by battles. Thereââ¬â¢s no control over the sky, Thomas uses the word ââ¬Å"wildâ⬠to describe it. Next he uses alliteration, sibilance ââ¬Å"strifeâ⬠, ââ¬Å"strungâ⬠, ââ¬Å"spedâ⬠its related with the past, as its in past tense. ââ¬Å"Strifeâ⬠describes the struggles theyââ¬â¢ve had, ââ¬Å"strungâ⬠indicates there was trouble. ââ¬Å"Vibrantâ⬠makes you think of a bright, alive and almost artistic place, but then he brings in the strong opinion of ââ¬Å"you cannot live in the presentâ⬠. Gillian Clarke, a feminist born in Cardiff in 1937, writes ââ¬Å"East Moorsâ⬠. She believes boredom is a major problem in Wales once the communityââ¬â¢s biggest employer closes down. It consists of 6 stanzas. Demolition is the main theme. This poem looks at change in the community, the sort of change some might regard as a progress, but which the poem suggests can undermine communities, individual identity and purpose. Steelworks meant more to men than anything in their life as it was their life, they were there all the time, it was the main topic of conversation and it was the income to support their families, without it they had nothing. The first line in this poem make you think a seasonal change will follow these events, the arrival of spring is to come with the arrival of May. Itââ¬â¢s a device used to suggest a possible end to bitter times but this is undermined in the final stanza when the phrases ââ¬Å"icyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rain is blowingâ⬠is used to describe the first day in May. The ââ¬Å"flash of seaâ⬠is a metaphor, to tell us there isnââ¬â¢t much sea. There areà some metaphors in ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠too: ââ¬Å"thick ambush of shadowsâ⬠is a metaphor for past memories haunting you. The fourth line in ââ¬Å"East Moorsâ⬠describes ââ¬Å"blue islandsâ⬠the word ââ¬Å"blueâ⬠has a double meaning ââ¬â the colour and also the emotion of sadness. In both poems there are examples of sibilance, in ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠it is ââ¬Å"sped, strung, strifeâ⬠and in ââ¬Å"East moorsâ⬠it is ââ¬Å"steelworks used to smokeâ⬠. This also tells us that the place used to be filled with industry. The first line of the second stanza shows typical lives of people living in the valleys in the 1930s, people were born in houses instead of hospitals, then they lived in them throughout their lives. The second and third lines describe how the how the steelworks often gave off flashes of light ââ¬Å"sudden glowâ⬠in the middle of the night, so the neighbours were ââ¬Å"accustomedâ⬠to it. Then it says a ââ¬Å"darkâ⬠sound, itââ¬â¢s a contrast to the earlier mention of ââ¬Å"glowâ⬠, and it could mean, low or spooky. Throughout the second stanza, thereââ¬â¢s a lot of cases of sibilance -ââ¬Å"suddenâ⬠, ââ¬Å"skyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"soundâ⬠, ââ¬Å"smellâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sulphurâ⬠. Thereââ¬â¢s also more sibilance in ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠, Thomas talks about ââ¬Å"softâ⬠consonants being ââ¬Å"strangeâ⬠to the ear. ââ¬Å"Softâ⬠is a positive word. The words have a strong connection to the welsh language as he chose to learn it in adulthood ââ¬â he finds it important to his heritage. In ââ¬Å"East Moorsâ⬠, the third stanza begins with alliteration ââ¬Å"Roathâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Rumneyâ⬠they are two areas of Cardiff, its showing typical sense of valley life. Now, clothes are hung in yards and thereââ¬â¢s no pollution to dirty these garments. Then comes more stereotypical life of men and women ââ¬â men being ââ¬Å"lethargicâ⬠and women lining up jobs for their lazy, redundant husbands. We know theyââ¬â¢re jobless, as the steelworks have been closed down, the explanation comes in the last line of the third stanza. The fourth stanza states how bitter these jobless men are, their misery matches the atmosphere as the ââ¬Å"skylineâ⬠is being destroyed as the building is torn down. The steelworks made a pattern like ââ¬Å"hieroglyphicsâ⬠. The day its torn down families gather round like itââ¬â¢s a day out, it remindsà us of tragedies like September 11th. The simile at the end of the fourth stanza shows how important it is to them, like losing someone close to them ââ¬Å"a deathâ⬠, there will now be an ââ¬Å"appalling voidâ⬠where the steelworks used to be. These are such negative words it emphasises the meaning of the loss of the steelworks. So in the final stanza, it describes a new beginning, the start of a month, it should be positive as summer is nearing, but as the steelworks are gone, May is a miserable month. There are, however, some positive words ââ¬Å"quieterâ⬠ââ¬Å"cleanerâ⬠but it goes on to say ââ¬Å"poorer from todayâ⬠which means the workers have lost their jobs. The fourth line is a repetition from the first stanza. It indicates that although the town might be poor the cherries are still growing. The last line shows it doesnââ¬â¢t take long to forget about the steelworks and life goes on. The sky is blind though and thereââ¬â¢s no future for the village. Back to ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠the next line in question, ââ¬Å"hushed at the fields cornersâ⬠, this means, theyââ¬â¢re being forced to be quiet, as if by barriers. Then again, Thomas brings up his pessimistic views of Wales, heââ¬â¢s determined to create an atmosphere so people think of past times. He even goes as far as to say things are ââ¬Å"brittleâ⬠and would break apart. Its so bad it canââ¬â¢t even have a real ghost, it has pretending ââ¬Å"sham ghostsâ⬠. All Wales has are mines so if they are going what else is here? Powerless people unable to perform sexually? Or people ââ¬Å"sick with inbreedingâ⬠? That is a harsh opinion, which shows Thomas thinks people never come out of Wales. The last line of the poem is a loose personification, meaning the song can worry and die. The song probably being the Welsh National Anthem. ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠has no rhythmic syllable pattern, which implies Wales isnââ¬â¢t structured. There isnââ¬â¢t a rhyme pattern either. In ââ¬Å"East Moorsâ⬠however, there isnââ¬â¢t a strong syllable pattern, there is however a rhythm and structure to the poem, it relates to the routine of the day. In both poems there are many cases of enjambment, this is mainly caused by the non-structured thereââ¬â¢s a lot of punctuation in both poems, I donââ¬â¢t however, believe that it helps with the meaning of the poem. The mood at the start ofà ââ¬Å"Welsh Landscapeâ⬠is the same as the end, dull, violent and derogatory towards Wales. In ââ¬Å"East Moorsâ⬠the mood at the start makes you think thereââ¬â¢ll be a seasonal changer, that the bitter times have ended, but in fact the times continue to be just as terrible as before.
